Adelaide has some of the most conservative adult industry regulations and laws in the country. While sex work is not entirely illegal, it is severely restricted.
You won’t find licensed brothels in South Australia as they are banned; however you will still find some venues that offer other forms of adult entertainment. Body rubs, tantra sessions and — of course — a handful of excellent titty bars.
While we cannot provide as extensive coverage of the Adelaide sex industry as we do for other major Aussie cities, we can certainly talk getting laid: hooking up, casual encounters and what exists of the fragmented swinging scene.
Quick Links:
- Adelaide Brothels – while they do exist, we can’t list any venues offering full service. What we’ve got instead is the closest alternatives you’re going to find.
- Adelaide Escorts – these services operate in a grey area of the law. Technically they are legal as long as you are only buying ‘companionship’. Our guide explains the legal blackhole.
- Adelaide Strip Clubs – finally, some action! We profile the nudie bars you should check out, plus the latest pricing, specials and events.
- Adelaide Erotic Massage – again, these don’t have the explicit menus that you’ll find beyond SA, but you can still find some hot sensual body rubs.
- Adelaide Adult Stores – did you know Addie has more sex shops per capita than any other large city in Australia?
Is Sex Work Legal In Adelaide?
While the act of providing sexual services is not explicitly illegal, many associated activities, such as brothel operation, living off earnings from sex work, or street solicitation, are criminalized under laws like the Summary Offences Act 1953 and the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935.
What this means is that neither sex workers or their clients have any protection if they are caught in the age-old transaction of money-for-sex.
If you’re travelling here from Sydney or Melbourne, and you’ve become accustomed to walking in to neon-lit brothels unopposed, you’re in for a rude awakening.
They call Addie the 20-Minute City… but not for the reasons your dirty mind is thinking.
You’re simply not going to find lavish, licensed five-star brothels like those in more progressive states. The law does not permit them in SA.
The brothels that do exist are shady hole-in-the-wall type venues that we highly suggest you avoid.
Views From The Locals
For all the red tape and legal shitstorms [surrounding sex work], the industry still goes on as normal… mostly. All of the major directories have listings for Adelaide, the massage shops operate on a wink wink nudge nudge basis. It’s one big sham. But it is what it is. I feel sorry for the private working girls that get made the scapegoats mostly. Too many stories of entrapment and bullshit setups. What a waste of time and energy.

The sex industry is always going to exist – the only thing the government is succeeding at is tarring us all with stigma or driving us underground. Bring in some regulation and tax the damn thing if it makes you feel better. The sooner we catch up with the rest of Australia, the better.

FAQs: The Dirty Side of Adelaide
Let’s delve deeper in to the naughty side of Addie with some of your candid FAQs.
What are the women like in Adelaide?
Women in Adelaide are probably more reserved and conservative compared to those in bigger cities like Sydney or Melbourne. If you’re new to the city, the girls can seem a little… cliquey, uptight.
This doesn’t mean they’re uninterested, but rather they prefer a more subtle, genuine approach.
Flashy pickup lines or overt shagging invitation might not be as effective here. Adelaide’s social circles are smaller and more tight-knit, so reputation and “social proof” are a good way to increase your bed-body count fast.
Are there any famous porn stars from Adelaide?
Ashley Winters is probably the best known Adelaide porn star. She’s safely attained cougar status with starring roles in Milfs Like It Black and Mom’a Anal Gape Fantasy (nice!). Other adult actresses from Addie include: Mia Magnusson, Teresa Palmer, Luci Power, Ashlee Adams and Megan Irwin.
Why are the sex work laws so strict in SA?
If we boil this down to the root cause, it’s most lklely because South Australia has a more conservative social environment compared to other parts of the country. South Australia’s sex work laws are primarily governed by the Summary Offences Act 1953. This legislation has its roots in mid-20th century views on morality and public order, which were much more conservative and restrictive.
Efforts to reform sex work laws in South Australia have faced significant resistance within the state’s parliament. We don’t see that changing anytime soon (sadly).
Any good pickup bars in town?
Some of the venues suggested by our readers include: Maybe Mae, Sugar Nightclub, Mother Vine (early bird catches the hen parties!), The Highway, Wheatsheaf Hotel and Electric Circus.
Does Adelaide have an official red light district?
Hindley Street is known as the “unofficial” red-light district of Adelaide. In fact, the Adelaide City Council is currently proposing new planning laws that would essentially confine all strip clubs and sex shops to the Hindley Street area.
In terms of street prostitution, the western suburbs of Adelaide (particularly off Hanson Road) are notorious for street walkers and daring johns.
What is the kink/BDSM scene like?
The Rabbit Hole is a top destination for swingers. If you are a swinger of the hardcore kink variety, you’ll probably enjoy their basement dungeon. Devious Adelaide holds regular BDSM parties. There is also Switch, a fetish club with regular nights of dress-up and kinkplay.
What is the LGBT scene like?
Adelaide is host to Feast, one of the top lesbian and gay festivals in all of Australia (held every November).
My Lover Cindi used to be the top queer bar in town, until the cost of living crisis saw it close down in early 2024. Mary’s Poppin over on Synagogue Place is the next best thing, described as the “jewel & heart of the LGBTQIA+ community in South Australia” 🌈
Who are the top OnlyFans stars from Adelaide?
OnlyFans is a fairly new phenomenon, but that hasn’t stopped Adelaide’s finest NSFW influencers from rising to the top. Some accounts we recommend include ScarlettesCam (Miss Nude Australia 2018, now employed by The Firm), yourfavouriteneighbour, TahleaX and pearlspeignoir.
