The past 10-20 years has seen Sydney’s sex shops shed much of their stigma and secrecy, turning into just another part of the retail landscape. Albeit with some pretty colourful shelves!
Across the city, you’ve got a mix of late-night Oxford Street dens, various fetish stores and a slew of new sex-positive emporiums – designed to attract a newer demographic of female customers (and couples).
Below, we’ve rounded up the best sex shops in the Sydney/NSW area. Looking to buy toys, fetish wear, lubes, gels, dolls, DVDs or anything adult related? Start here!
A List of Popular Sex Shops In Sydney
One of the recurring themes we see is that traditional adult stores are shifting their messaging from pure “sex shop” to a more wellness and lifestyle-oriented approach.
Many of the newer stores in Sydney now host workshops, stock body-safe (and even “eco-friendly”) products, and employ staff with a background in sexology or health. If you’re looking for the old-school approach – peep shows and sticky floors! – don’t worry, there’s still a few stores waving the tawdry neon.
Pleasure Chest
Level 1/705 George St, Haymarket NSW 2000
https://www.pleasurechest.com.au
A prime example of how adult stores are changing…
This space was once a famed “skin-flick” palace with private video booths… but today it’s a modern 21st-century “emporium” with a welcoming LGBTQ+ friendly vibe.
In Pleasure Chest, you’ll find everything from budget-friendly novelties to high-end brands. And they even provide same-day delivery and click-and-collect (if you can’t wait) in the wider Sydney region.
Current bestsellers include the Lovense Gemini, Lelo Sona Cruise and Kiiroo Keon – so not your average tacky products that have been sitting in a warehouse for several years. These are premium brands, and recent releases. Most of the stock would be considered a little more mainstream/vanilla than some of the options on our list – but for the average shopper, it should tick all the boxes.
- Open 24/7, accessible via a small staircase on George St.
Max Black
Level 1/264 King St, Newtown NSW 2042
Known for super-friendly customer service that goes a step beyond most adult stores, Max Black has rapidly become one of Sydney’s premier boutique adult stores. It keeps things both classy and kinky.
The shop was founded in 2006 with the mission to reinvent how Aussies shop for intimacy. It offers only high-quality, body-safe toys, luxe lubricants, fetish fashion, and even erotic literature for those looking to expand their bedtime reading collection.
Their website menu is telling in itself. Forget the usual headline categories of DILDOS or VIBRATORS. Here the top categories are listed as Vegan, Locally Made, Eco & Conscious, Natural & Organic and Gender Expression.
It makes for a slightly bewildering UX, but it leaves little confusion about who this store is for… and it’s not the guys paying $2 a pop for peep shows. 😂
The Toolshed
Basement/191 Oxford St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
This is much more of a throwback to the way adult shops always used to be.
The Toolshed is one of Oxford Street’s longest-standing sex shop dens, and it feels every bit like the name suggests. Forget sleek boutique emporium branding; this place is a proper old-school adult store, stuffed to the gills with porn DVDs, oversized dildos, bondage basics and novelty props that range from hilarious to horrifying (in a good way).
It’s long been part of Sydney’s gay nightlife strip, and regulars will tell you it’s got a loyal following for exactly that reason. The stock leans heavier towards male shoppers – cock rings, lube by the litre, and more varieties of dildos than you thought existed – but couples and curious first-timers will still find plenty to browse.
They also stock some pricy high-tech gear, including the Buck Motorbunny (for a sweet ass $6K) and several varieties of fucking machines. Probably not vegan lol.
- Open daily, 9:30am to 8pm (closes at 11pm on Friday and Saturday)
Adult World
- 124A Oxford St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
- Unit 1/386 Botany Rd, Beaconsfield NSW 2015
- 69 Bankstown City Plaza, Bankstown NSW 2200
- 1/320 King St, Newtown NSW 2042
Adult World is exactly what the name suggests: a sprawling supermarket of sex. The Darlinghurst store is deceptively large, brightly lit, and lined floor-to-ceiling with toys, DVDs, lingerie, bondage kits, dolls, lube, gels, costumes – basically anything with even a whiff of kink attached.
You might be surprised if you judged it by the entrance (see above).
Like most adult stores in busy parts of Sydney, you’ll need to climb some stairs to hit the good stuff. It’s all tucked away out of Little Jonny’s eyes.
With other branches scattered across Newtown, Bankstown, and Beaconsfield, Adult World is probably the most accessible chain in Sydney. And for a lot of people, that’s the appeal: you don’t need to trek across town or steel yourself to walk into a niche fetish boutique.
Here, you just grab what you need from the shelves like you’re shopping for pasta sauce in the suburbs. The downside is that they don’t appear to stock as many of the major brands that you’ll find on somewhere like LoveHoney or Wild Secrets.
Funtasia
1037A Victoria Rd, West Ryde NSW 2114
Funtasia is another example that proves that you don’t need to head into the city for your bedroom supplies. Out in West Ryde, this suburban sex shop offers a solid mix of vibrators, lingerie, bondage kits, DVDs, and party novelties. It’s something of a local one-stop shop… less overwhelming than the mega chains, but with enough fresh bedroom gizmos to keep most people happy.
In fact, if we look at the brands they stock (We-Vibe, Lovense, Fleshlight, Kiiroo), it’s actually quite an impressive collection.
The Funtasia online store contains a limited range of items you can have shipped to your door (in Sydney) via their 2 hour delivery service with Uber.
The selection is mostly limited to smaller items – fair enough, your rider probably doesn’t want to be seen lugging a massive Sex Machine around the North Shore.
- Open daily, 10am to 10pm. Closes at 11pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
Sax Fetish
247 Oxford St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
If you’re serious about leather, latex, or BDSM gear, Sax Fetish is where you go. And you probably knew this already.
This long-standing Oxford Street store is part sex shop, part fetish outfitter, and part queer cultural landmark. Inside you’ll find walls of harnesses, latex catsuits, floggers, whips, ropes, chastity cages, and toys that could double as medieval torture devices.
It’s all fun and games with consent!
The shop caters to pretty much all-comers but obviously has deep roots in Sydney’s gay leather community, and that heritage shows. The staff here aren’t just sales assistants – many are part of the kink scene themselves, which means they know their gear and give solid advice on safety, fit, and play.
Sax is pitched squarely at “the pursuit of your most perverse pleasures“.
Not your typical vanilla sex shop.
- Open daily, 11am to 7pm (12-6pm on Sunday)
Adult XXX City
159 Oxford St, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
Adult XXX City is one of the few Oxford Street shops still combining retail with the infamous old-school video booths of yesteryear… it’s a well-known cruising spot in the area.
No website, just word of mouth.
The front of the store is stocked with toys, DVDs, lube, and magazines, while the back caters to those who fancy jerking one out over a private viewing session. No doubt you’ll bump into all sorts of interesting characters if you drop by here late at night. It’s open later than most stores.
- Open daily, 11am to 1am (3am on Fri/Sat)
Everything Adult
Level 1/760 George St, Haymarket NSW 2000
https://www.everythingadult.online
Everything Adult has been in the game for over 30 years now; it has a decent selection of adult toys across all of the major categories.
There aren’t as many of the major US/EU brands stocked here, and the pricing is somewhat inflated by the location, but it’s still worth a visit if you’re looking for a CBD fix.
This store is another that is accessed via a set of stairs, on George Street. You won’t miss the bright yellow signage outside. Again, once you actually get inside, the shop is deceptively spacious with some densely-packed shelves.
